What a week this has been in my coaching world. I have had conversations with leaders who are interested in coaching because they truly want to grow a strong team of business builders and one leader actually said these words,
“I have a team of buyers not builders.”
Other things I heard were …
I can’t motivate my team.
I’m sharing training and ideas with my team and no-one is listening or responding.”
When you have a team of people who are not responding, or are comfortable with placing a few orders and not building, then I recommend two things which are probably not what you think.
The first is to spend time in building relationships with team members. Find out exactly what they want out of their business. We “think” we know what they need, but until you spend time deepening your relationship with each team member and find out exactly what she needs (from her own lips) then we really don’t know.
Building relationships is the cornerstone of a direct sales business. This week a client told me because she is now taking the time to build relationships with her hostesses she has two of them joined her team.
When you VALUE your relationship with each team member and know exactly what she wants from her business, you are fully vested in her success and she will feel that and respond to you.
The second is to live what you preach by sharing your journey. Let your team know how you’re handling customers and hostesses. Let your team know when you handle rejection. Let your team know about your fears and failures. Sharing your journey of success and failures inspires them, it doesn’t motivate them. Motivation has to come from within, but your actions will inspire them. Your words will inspire them.
When you value your relationship with your team and inspire them with your actions, you’ll find you have a team full of people who want to succeed in growing a successful business and you’ll have a team of builders not buyers.
