I walked into a Holiday Business meeting at my local Chamber of Commerce. The registration person smiled and I smiled back and I filled out my name
tag. As I pasted that name tag on my jacket, I asked her…
“Do we have a good crowd today?”
“Oh yes,” she replied, “we have filled every seat, so make sure you sit at a front table to hear our speaker. Oh, by the way, I love your outfit!”
(Now, I could have just said Thank you and kept on walking, but here’s what I did.)
“Thank you, Jane (I quickly
read her name tag.) I love to say I “wear” my business! What is your business?”
“Oh, I have an accounting business.”
“Do you have your own office?”
“Why, yes! My office is in the Hanson Building downtown. I’m on the 10th floor.”
“Wow! That’s a beautiful new building. How do you like working there?”
“I love it! It’s full of professional people. My clients are impressed when they visit me.”
“I would think so! How long have you been an accountant?”
“I worked for a large firm and recently went out on my own.”
“How’s business?”
“It’s growing
every day and I’m attracting great clients.”
“Congrats to you Jane. I always love to hear entrepreneurial success stories. Do you have a business card?”
“Here it is! (she handed it to me.) “By the way, what did you mean you “wear” your business?”
“I’m in the fashion business. I help women like you, save money in their closets with my professional wardrobing plan. Here’s my card for
you.”
“Thanks, Gale. (looking at my business card.) I’d love to see your fashions sometime.”
“Well, Jane. I showcase my product every Friday from 2pm to 7pm. I have your number. What if I call you next week to set your appointment?”
“That sounds like fun! (pause) I think the meeting is about to begin! We’d better get
seated.”
“It was great talking with you Jane! I’ll look forward to connecting next week.”
