I hope your September is shaping up to be your best month yet for 2017! Yes, it’s back to school time and that
means people are back to routines and looking for new opportunities. This week I had a tour of my lovely daughter’s new art classroom. She teaches K thru 5 Art and always shares some great stories with me. Yesterday, she shared a wonderful story about her rowdy 7 year old's who were not paying attention in class. I probably would have hit the desk and said “pay attention!” But, Alexandra had a better way. To make them pay attention all she had to do was ask
one question.
“Put up your hand if you are being the best version of yourself today?”
Of course, most of them put up
their hands, but when she zeroed in on the real rowdy ones, (just a few) the hands began to fall down when they were faced with that look from the teacher. I thought it was a brilliant technique and it reminded me of the different leadership styles and what it takes to keep a million dollar team focused and being the best version of yourself as a leader. Your Leadership Style?
When my daughter shared her story with me about helping her 7 year old student be the best version of themselves, it
reminded me of how important it is to lead a team of independent people who deal with challenges, distractions and difficult tasks each day running their own Direct Sales business.
I know when I was growing my million dollar team I found the best way to get results was to help my team members be successful. It is that old cliché by Zig
Ziglar,
“When you help others be successful, YOU are successful.”
That’s what being a leader is all about. You want to have WINNERS on your team and have as many as possible.
And yes, sometimes it is a little discouraging when team members join and fizzle out, and you have people who always make excuses for not taking action, but here’s the thing, if you know that you are giving them the BEST tools to be successful and you’re giving them all you are capable of to assist them in creating success in themselves, then the RIGHT People will step up and be a
winner!
This week in our L.E.A.P. Mastermind group, we looked at ways to get more team engagement to have winners on the team, but it all boils down to how you as a leader are being the best version of yourself each day as you lead your team to have thriving businesses.
So, my
question to you is, “Put your hand up if you are being the best version of yourself as a leader today?”
Here are my top 10 qualities I believe help leaders lead their team in a style that builds winners! If you follow these 10 ways you will have team members who LOVE belonging to
your team and being led by you.
#1 Be Consistent When you are consistent with your leadership actions, your team knows they can trust you! If you are running by the seat of your pants and plugging holes in your calendar, calling team meetings at the last minute and communicating on and off, your team won’t respond to anything. But, if you are communicating
consistently, (see #6) everyone knows what to expect and will step up to attend every event you hold. When you are consistent with team systems, they will follow your lead and begin having fantastic success.
#2 Build confidence. This is the cornerstone of being a great leader! We are in an industry that thrives on rewarding people for their
efforts, so create incentives for your team that will enable them to grow and be winners! When you help them stretch, you build their confidence, this means helping them push to do something they haven’t done before. Celebrate success everywhere and ask team members what is going well. When they share what is going well that give them confidence! Bottom line, when you build confidence in others, you get
results!
#3 Give the best
guidance in the first 90 days. How you welcome a new person into your team will determine the strength of your team. Pay attention to how you track and follow up with every new team members in their first 30 , 60 , 90 days. Your fast start incentive is one of the BEST indicators in helping a new team member be successful. Get them introduced to the team, share with them how to get help and let them know you and your team are there to help them. In the CALENDAR
GIRLS system we follow a very powerful 5-step New Recruit success system.
#4 Set the pace for others to follow! This is about being hands on and leading by example. You must SET The pace! You want them to be you! What kind of pace are you setting – are you holding 1 party a week?
Are you bringing guests to every Take a Look? If you want them to do something, you make sure YOU are doing it! MODEL what it’s like to be a successful consultant. Your team are watching you, so let them know what you’re doing.
#5 Keep it simple without overloading with too much information.
This is important especially for new recruits! But the way to keep things simple is to have systems in place! Systems like sequential training! Weekly tips on live video. Cover all the learning styles of visual, audio and kinesthetic.
#6 Have an open door policy
– keep communication lines open! This doesn’t mean you have to be available 24/7. Set the expectation and let the team know when you’re available and that you’ll be there if there is any emergency when you are needed. With today’s technology, a quick text can diffuse any situation that needs your attention.
#7 Mentor and work with team members. Don’t be a boss and “tell” people what to do. Use coaching skills, ask questions, get them to help themselves you’re your guidance. Hold 3-way prospecting calls, mentor new leaders and get everyone booking on the team calendar.
#8 Stay positive through challenges. And believe me there will be challenges. Work on solutions. If you feel you’re having trouble seek out a higher source, a top leader or company executive, someone with experience who can help you deal with the situation.
#9 Help the stars on the team SHINE and move up! Highlight your stars. Have them help at team meetings and lead workshops for others. Coach them on working to a higher level and be winners!
#10 When the team wins, everyone wins! Use this as your motto! It’s about team building! Set team goals! In the CALENDAR GIRLS system we work with 3 important goals! Your job
is to build activity to hit those goals. More bookings, bring more activity, so focus on your team’s party success. Have party goals, team booking goals and team recruiting goals! The more “activity” on the team, the more you will achieve team goals. And when the team wins, everyone wins!
Leadership requires integrity.
This means you have to step up and make sure you do what you say you will do. I love the saying, “Integrity is doing the right thing when no-one is watching.” But, here’s the thing your team are watching you.
So, today read through these Top 10 qualities and ask yourself, “Am I being the best version of myself today?”
