They say it takes 31 days
to form a habit, and this week I was so impressed with my 7 year old grandson, Dylan, who took the challenge from his teacher to create a 100 days project celebrating 100 days of school.
Check out his awesome project in the pic above of all the different colored fish. He called it Dylan’s100 Fish Bait Ball and every day he would cut out a different colored fish from
a template he made. Each day, for 100 days he added the jewel eyes and hung them from his bamboo pole. He is a passionate fisherman. He never misses the program “Hawaii Goes Fishing” at six o’clock on Sunday nights. He knows the Hawaiian name of most fish and loves to spend time with his dad and brother casting at the beach hoping to catch the “big” one.
So, what
does this have to do with your direct sales business? Actually, EVERYTHING! Dylan's little 100 day project reminded me of the FOCUS it took to build my million dollar team.
I remember when I moved to Denver, Colorado and didn’t know one person. It was a tough time as we had only moved to Seattle six months before. My husband had accepted
a new position in Denver. We were starting all over again. I remember driving around Denver, and saying, “I’ll give this place six months and if it doesn’t work, I’m moving back to Seattle.”
I’d built a small team in Hawaii and Seattle, and I felt like I was starting all over AGAIN for the third time! It was a pivotal time in my business where I could
throw in the towel or put my big girl panties on and get out and meet some people in a new city of people I didn't know.
If I looked back at the first 100 days of STARTING over, I would say, it was that “consistency” of focusing on one action every day to meet people and share my products that changed the course of my business. Just like Dylan who focused on making ONE fish
every day for his project, I had to focus on finding ways to meet people in this big city of three million every day. This is what “My 100 day focus” looked like.
- I joined a business referral group similar to www.bni.org where I developed deep business partner relationships. This group was weekly commitment and was instrumental in helping me get my first bookings on my calendar. This organization helped me master my skills at speaking in front of people every week about my products and my business opportunity. The relationships I grew in this organization extended my reach in getting to meet a lot of people in a remarkably short time. (Remember, I’d given this place
six months:)
- Next, I joined a Chamber of Commerce and attended as many events as possible to meet people. These organizations are a gold mine to build relationships with people you’ve never met before. They are full of people who understand doing business with each other. They are a great target market for your business.
They have events every week, sometimes two and three events. These are business opportunities waiting in the wings for you to capture. (Attending these events was out of my comfort zone, but, remember I said I had to put my big girl panties on, this made the difference.)
- I even volunteered for the American Heart Association and handed out flyers at the local
supermarket so I could meet people and talk to people and build relationships.
So, I found the places to meet people, now I had to find ways to introduce my business. Here's what my days looked like for those first 100 days.
- Two days a week I was out of the house meeting people at networking events
- Every Wednesday, I held a "Home
showcase" event at my home. This was the next step intro after meeting people for the first time. (I did this for a whole year!)
- I scheduled two private appointments every week
- I scheduled two recruiting appointments every week.
All of these activities are what I call "High Revenue" activities. They are actions that bring money into your business. Of
course, this was before we were doing online parties and business. But I believe it's important to build it OFFLINE first and then take those relationships ONLINE to grow a deeper online business.
That first 100 days in Denver were the SEEDS that built my million dollar team.
- From the
first 5 people I met who agreed to attend my first party
- to my first team meeting with two people around my kitchen table,
- to receiving the award of the #1 Team in the country
- and celebrating on many trips around the
world!
