Do you know a D.I.V.A. when you see one? It's an acronym I teach in my Rock Star Recruiting program.
A D.I.V.A. is someone you spot immediately, at your parties, at a networking event or even a social event. She is someone who just stands out from the crowd and she is that one person you would love to have on your team!
She has all the qualities of a STAR. She's a D.I.V.A.
D. A woman who knows how to make a decision
I. A woman who is influential and knows a lot of people.
V. A woman who has vision and knows how to plan, and
A. A woman who has a positive "Attitude" and is "Action Oriented."
When you recruit her, you are so excited because you've finally found someone like yourself. Someone who sees the big picture and wants to build a real business, like you. And then, suddenly, she's hard to contact. You leave messages and she doesn't get back to you. And you are so frustrated because you can't figure out what happened?
Then you have the new recruit who gets excited for the first 30 days. Holds a successful launch party and looks like she's ready to earn her first level of fast start. And again, out of nowhere, she slips away, never to be heard of again.
My coach used to sing me these lines from the song by Kenny Rogers "You got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em" when I got discouraged. What is the trick about knowing when to "hold em" and "fold em?"
It's a problem many direct sales leaders face, and it can be quite disappointing. Experiencing these same frustrations when growing my million dollar team, I created three strategies that helped me deal with them. I focused on people "wanting" to belong to our team and grow a business, and these three strategies helped me get over the pain of wondering why people dropped off the face of the earth.
FIRST: A New Recruit Success System. When you introduce a success path for every new recruit it gives them an opportunity to "be" successful. It sets up expectations for success. And when, people know "how" by following a step-by-step success formula or system, they will jump on-board with enthusiasm and excitement.
My private and group coaching clients learn the importance of my 5-step New Recruit Success System right from the beginning of our time together. It is an essential tool in growing people who want to build a business
SECOND: A Well Oiled Recognition System. People love to be praised. They love to be recognized for their accomplishments. I believed so much in this mantra in building winning teams that I invested a certain percentage of my income in incentive rewards every month. Praise and recognition are the most powerful form of motivation. It's so much more effective to focus on people's strengths than to criticize their weaknesses. You are simply pushing up people all the time when you have a well-oiled recognition system.
The best part about praising one person in your team is that it motivates others. People notice praise even when it goes to someone else. It's this team mantra that new team members "notice" right in the beginning that encourages them to follow that new recruit success path to earn their first reward.
THIRD: Creating community Strategy. Or, as I like to say, create the "love."
In the book, "Triibes" by Seth Godin, he says the internet can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals, from people just like you who have passion and want to make a difference in helping others.
Creating community was my #1 priority in building my million dollar team and is still my #1 priority in coaching leaders build million dollar teams. People today are looking for friendships and to belong to a group of like-minded people.
The first thing a community wants is a leader who shares a team vision. Share your vision with a new team member so she catches the spirit of the big picture when she belongs to "your" team. Grow an authentic friendship with each new team member when you welcome her to the team. Authenticity is the very core of everything you build with your team. Being authentic, being real, and genuinely caring for others is the guiding principle to having people stick around when they know you are the real deal.
People, right now, are looking for opportunities to make money and belong to a special group that
- Has a success path "system" to begin their new business.
- Enjoys praise and recognition that filters through every communication from their leader, and
- Is a community that has authentic friendships and people who love to be with each other.
So, what about the D.I.V.A. who disappeared off the face of the earth in the first few weeks of joining? What was missing for her? Of course, you know the answer. It's not about you! She is missing because of something that happened in her life, or she simply changed her mind and is too embarrassed to tell you.
That's when you have to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. I believe people cross our paths for a reason. The D.I.V.A. who I thought was going to be my next star helped me implement these three important strategies. The "right" D.I.V.A. did appear later, and many many more. And we we all enjoyed being part of a dynamic million dollar team.
