I have a confession: This week, I found myself avoiding a big project I’ve been wanting to complete. You know the kind—one that’s been sitting on your to-do list, staring at you, yet somehow, everything else feels more important like needing to reorganize my desk or cross off other things on the list!.
Can
you relate?
As entrepreneurs who work from home, we face a unique challenge when it comes to staying accountable. With no boss looking over our shoulders, it’s easy to extend deadlines, get distracted, or procrastinate until the last minute. But here’s what I’ve learned:
Accountability is a
game-changer.
When you have systems and structures in place, you get things done—and you feel good about it.
Here’s what I’m doing to stay accountable when procrastination, distractions, and overwhelm creep in:
- Setting clear action steps: I have to remember
vague actions like "work on my project" won't cut it. I need to be specific with action steps that have deadlines. Instead of "write my first blog" I need to say, "write my first blog by Wednesday at 2pm."
- Being Honest with my Coach: I need to be honest with my coach who is my accountability partner and share a deadline with her to help me stay accountable. When I have to report back to someone, it pushes me to take
action.
- Time Block using the Pomodoro Technique: I already schedule time blocks on my calendar every week, but I need to go back and use the Pomodoro technique to tackle some of the important tasks. Pomodoro always works for me. If you haven't tried it yet, it's a game-changer where you focus for 25 minutes at a time. Learn how I use it here.
This week, I finally sat down and tackled that project. And let me tell you, the relief of crossing these actions off my list was so worth it.
Are you struggling with procrastination too? I encourage you to try one (or all!) of these strategies.
