Entrepreneurs, Be Aware of these 5 Common Mistakes
Back when networking was strictly an “offline” experience, I remember teaming up with my friend Linda, a real
estate agent, to attend events.
We’d drive together, chatting about our ideal clients and practicing our introductions. But once we arrived, we’d split up, each determined to make meaningful connections.
Afterward, we’d regroup to dissect the event—what worked, what we could have said differently, and who we planned to follow up with.
Looking back, those moments weren’t just about networking; they were about sharpening our skills and breaking through the barriers that held us back from attracting the right clients. And the best part? We made networking fun in the process.
Here are 5 common mistakes I notice most people make when introducing themselves and these could be costing you valuable connections and opportunities.
- You’re Not Clear. If people look puzzled when you introduce yourself, your message isn’t being heard. When people instantly "get" what you do, they see your value and want to connect.
- Your Message is Forgettable. If you say, "I'm a business coach," "I sell skincare," or "I run a wellness business," and people’s eyes glaze over, your message isn’t sparking interest.
- You Sound Scripted.
If your introduction feels rehearsed and robotic, it won’t engage people. Be aware of your tone and make it natural. You want to build connection and curiosity.
- Your Message is way too long. If you mention two businesses or a long drawn out explanation, you risk overwhelming your listener and you lose them.
- You’re not smiling. A smile goes a long way and it opens up a pathway where people know you’re feeling
confident.
