Question: What's Holding you back?
I’ve been asking myself some hard questions lately and they make me get very honest with myself and my coach. This is one of my favorite questions and reminds me of a story from Jack
Canfield in his seminar I was in years ago. The question is.
Here’s what Jack Canfield shared in his seminar. Jack held up a $100 bill and said, ”who wants this $100 bill?” Of course, many people in the audience raised their hands. Some waved them vigorously back and forth, some even shouted out, “I want it!” or “I’ll take it!” or “Give it to me!”
Jack just stood there calmly holding out the bill until audience “got it.” Eventually, someone jumped out of her seat, rushed to the front of the room and took the bill right out of his hand. After she sat down – now $100 richer for her efforts – he asks the audience,
“What did that person do that no one else in the room did?
She got off her butt and TOOK ACTION!”
She did what was necessary to get the money!
He then asks… How many of you thought about getting up to take that $100 bill but stopped yourself? Some of the answers Jack got was…
- I didn’t want
to look like I wanted or needed it that badly.
- I was too far back in the room.
- I was afraid I might be doing something wrong and then people would judge me or laugh at me.
- I was waiting for further instructions.
Jack then shared, “Whatever you said to stop
yourself from getting up and taking that $100 bill are the same things you say to yourself that stops you in life." He said, one of the universal truths in life is, “how you do anything is how you do everything.”
- If you were cautious in thinking about taking that $100 bill, you are cautious everywhere.
- If you held yourself back for fear of looking foolish, you are probably holding yourself back for fear of looking foolish everywhere.
